Rowing Program Highlights

2004

This may look like a big, green shipping container, but it's really a boathouse!

Thanks to the cooperation of the New York City Department of Parks and recreation, East River CREW has installed a shipping container at East 96th Street and the FDR Drive! This will allow us to store two Whitehall gig rowing boats and other equipment needed to provide recreational rowing here for the first time in a generation.

As in the past, and until a 96th Street davit is complete, rowing practice and events also take place at Floating the Apple's Greenwich Village Community Boathouse at Pier 40 (on the Hudson!), West Houston Street, Hudson River Park.

Hook Row 2003

Due to conditions at our regular put-in spot at the Erie Basin, Red Hook, Brookly, rowers began at Roberto Clemente Park in the Bronx, and during the 5-mile one way trip passed by the historic Highbridge and and its tower on the Harlem River.

Our destination, East 96th Street & the river, viewed here from the FDR Access Road, is the site for a davit to be installed. The davit lifts boats in and out of the water and will, for the first time in nearly a century, provide a neighborhood starting point for community rowing activities.
