East River C.R.E.W. board members continuously go above and beyond in steering our nonprofit in the right direction and through the sometimes turbulent waters. Also at the heart of our organization are the core rowers and volunteers who can be counted on week after week.
TO ALL, THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!
East River C.R.E.W. Board Members include the following:
tori gilbert
CO-FOUNDER; CURRICULUM COORDINATOR
Tori Gilbert has worked as an educator at Saint David’s School since 1989. She has volunteered in local shelters (church) and young teen mom’s residences (New York Junior League). Her involvement in East River C.R.E.W., since 1999, is due to her belief that, “Everyone deserves convenient access onto their waters. We learn from each other and our interactions with the environment. Learning more about our environment means we can be better stewards of the legacy on loan to us from future generations.”
mary nell hawk
PRESIDENT, BOARD OF DIRECTORS; ROWING COACH AND LEADER
Mary Nell Hawk, Ed.M, Teachers College Columbia University, discovered East River C.R.E.W. as a way to honor her parents who built and enjoyed using boats in western Pennsylvania. She teaches at Borough of Manhattan Community College and advises the BMCC Rowing Club. She is an advocate for public access to New York’s largest public open space, its rivers and harbor. “New Yorkers have been cut off from their waterfront for two generations. I am thrilled to be part of reversing that trend, introducing people to a sustainable, zero-carbon footprint form of healthy outdoor exercise on the water.”
joe herrod
Secretary, Board of Directors
Joe Herrod is a longtime Yorkville resident and retired NYC transit authority procurement manager. He recently served five years as a seasonal assistant forest ranger with DEC in the Catskill mountains. An avid rower and coxswain for the past three seasons, Joe enjoys using his understanding of outdoor programs as well as his administrative skills to further the mission and activities of the organization.
Albert Stashin
Treasurer; Board of Directors
A Self-employed contractor managing his own business, Al has volunteered carpentry and mechanical skills, plus he is an active rower and coxswain. With an enthusiasm and grasp of the challenges of sustainable entrepreneurship, Al looks forward to contributing to East River CREW’s fiscal health.
